Abstract:

In order to study the signs of œstrus in the West African Dwarf goat, 28 non pregnant females younger than 24 months of age were used. Most of them (94.7%) had waggled the tail during heat. The frequency of micturition was higher in the presence of the male. The swelling of the vulva was observed in 68.4% of goats in heat. The cervico-vaginal mucus was significantly (P≤0.05) abundant and elastic during œstrus. The duration of œstrus was 1.91± 0.07 day and increased with the female age.Signs of heat were less prominent in younger than in older females. Behavioural changes, vulva appearance and the characteristics of cervico-vaginal mucus can be used as criteria for detection of œstrus inthe West African Dwarf goat.

Comparative Response of the West African Dwarf Goats to Experimental Infections with Red Sokoto and West African Dwarf Goat Isolates of Haemonchus contortus

Response of the West African Dwarf (WAD) goats to two different isolates of Haemonchus contortus, the Red Sokoto (RS) goat isolate (RSHc) and the WAD goat isolate (WADHc) (isolated from WAD goats), was studied by experimental infections of 4-6-month-old male WAD goat kids. Group 1 and Group 2 goats were each infected with 4500 infective larvae (L3) of RSHc and WADHc, respectively. Group 3 anima...

Ovarian activities of the West African dwarf goat (Capra hircus) during oestrus.

Ovarian activity was studied by laparotomy of 9 adult nulliparous goats in which oestrus was synchronized. Ovulation occurred in animals operated on 20-48 h from the onset of sexual receptivity. There was a mean ovulation rate of 1.57 ova per doe and the right and left ovaries had similar follicular activity in relation to sizes of follicles and ovulations.

A case of polydactyly in the hind-limbs of a West African Dwarf goat in South-West Nigeria.

This report describes a case of polydactyly in the hind-limb of a West African Dwarf goat kid in South West Africa. Radiological examination and macerated bones of the animal showed a bifid shape of each metatarsal that was more prominent from the distal half of the diaphysis. This resulted in the presence of f...

Influence of naturally unilateral cryptorchidism on the histomorphometry of the testes and daily sperm production in West African Dwarf goats

Quantitative histology of the descended testis of unilateral cryptorchid bucks was compared with testis of normal bucks to evaluate the reproductive potentials of the scrotal testis in unilateral cryptorchids, using light microscopy techniques. The contralateral scrotal testes of the unilateral cryptorchids and the testes of the normal bucks contained profiles of seminiferous epithelium and eac...
